One of the most popular decorative painting is Venetian plaster, which easily simulates the effect of a natural stone–a polished marble. The use of this finishing technique allows home designers to implement a variety of interesting solutions to get the first-class interior. With a variety of techniques of applying Venetian plaster, you can create a style and atmosphere of ethnic stylized, refined minimalistic, high-tech, or classic design.

The phrase “Venetian plaster” originates from the Ancient Rome, whose residents came up with the material’s composition and its application technique. The precise technique of Venetian plaster manufacturing is almost unchanged to this day. Proportions vary, but the basic components remain the same as they were in the Ancient Rome. Traditionally, the coating is performed in one color, although multi-colored plaster is also possible.

Types of Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster can be of the following types:

Veneto is the plaster for interior design. This type is generally used for the interiors in the Middle Ages style, where the surface should shine and create the effect of polished marble.

Trevignano is a decorative plaster, often used to add an element of luxury to the interior design. This type is a good choice for the Renaissance interiors.

One of the most favorite design techniques is the combination of decorative Venetian plaster with wallpaper, paint, mosaic, decorative stone, and murals. The use of such technology to create a coating of walls and ceilings gives the room a unique style. Venetian plaster is an odorless, non-toxic, non-flammable material that is easy to apply. In addition, it effectively prevents the formation of mold and bacteria.

How to Apply Venetian Plaster

Decorative plaster is applied to any solid surface, but metal and wood. The coating is sufficiently strong, robust and durable. Such coverage gets even harder with time. Due to the properties of this type of plaster, it is used successfully for both internal and external finishes.

Venetian plaster can be applied in several stages:

First, carefully prepare the wall by cleaning it and applying a tinted plaster over a low-sheen surface. In some cases, the surface needs to be primed before applying the plaster. It is also a good idea to go over the dry surface with 100-grit sand paper. This will smooth the wall and prepare it for the plaster.

Second, apply the base coat. It is very important to hold the trowel at the correct angle (15 to 30 degrees).

Third, let the plaster dry for about 3-4 hours. Remember that Venetian plaster takes more drying time and it may take a few days to complete the painting.

Fourth, apply the second coat of the plaster and smooth away any edge marks.

Fifth, optionally you can apply a top coat of the plaster. Normally, the areas with a lot of traffic or moisture need this additional coat, which makes the surface washable and shinier.

Venetian plaster is a lasting and durable finishing material. Because such coverage is less elastic than other decorative coatings, the most important thing to strengthen the plaster is a well prepared base.

Venetian Plaster Composition

Venetian plaster is made of marble flour, various additives, lime jelly and inorganic oxides. Sometimes, quartz, malachite or lime dust is added. The quality of the plaster and its color patterns depends on the degree of grinding stone and the amount of organic or inorganic dyes. To create a more “subtle” surface use smaller particles. In most cases, Venetian plaster does not contain any harmful substances, pigments or other components with heavy metals such as chromium or lead. It also does not contain toxic, aromatic, and chlorinated solvents. When working with this type of plaster, you should take simple precautions listed in the instructions.
